Ontwerp samen met algen en ontdek de impact van AI op de natuur AI lijkt iets digitaals, het kost ook energie, grondstoffen en computers. In deze workshop onderzoek je wat dat betekent voor de natuur.
In deze workshop werk je met algen, schimmels, aarde en materialen zoals ijzer en koper. Maak je een idee voor een AI-toepassing. Daarna kijk je welke keuzes daarin belangrijk zijn, zoals datagebruik, hardware en energieverbruik.
Van die keuzes maken we een recept voor het kweken van algen. De algen laten daarna zien wat het effect is: groeien ze goed, of gaan ze juist achteruit? Zo wordt de invloed van AI zichtbaar in levend materiaal.
In 3 uur maak je dus niet alleen een ontwerp, maar ervaar je ook hoe technische keuzes invloed kunnen hebben op de natuurlijke wereld.
Voor wie? Iedereen die nieuwsgierig is naar AI, ontwerp, natuur en de toekomst van technologie. Je hebt geen voorkennis nodig.
Organisatie
De workshop wordt gegeven door Tiwánee van der Horst. Ze werkt op de Hogeschool Rotterdam. Daar kijkt zij naar de invloed van AI op het milieu. Ook wil ze die invloed zichtbaar en voelbaar te maken voor mensen door samen met de natuur te ontwerpen.
Praktische informatie Meedoen is gratis. De workshop vindt plaats op drie verschillende dagen. Je kiest zelf welke datum het beste past.
De workshops vinden plaats op:

7 mei 2026 van 18.30 tot 21.30 uur
21 mei 2026 van 14.00 tot 17.00 uur
De eerste groep maakt de eerste ontwerpideeën. De tweede en derde groep bouwen daarop verder. Zij kijken naar de resultaten van de vorige workshop en passen de ontwerpen aan op basis van wat de algen laten zien. Alle resultaten worden onderdeel van een installatie.
De workshops zijn in het Engels en vinden plaats in het -1 Digital Lab van Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam. Er is plek voor maximaal 10 deelnemers per workshop. Dus schrijf je snel in via het formulier.

Design with algae and discover the impact of AI on nature
AI may seem purely digital, but it also uses energy, raw materials, and computers. In this workshop, you will explore what that means for nature.
You will work with algae, fungi, soil, and materials such as iron and copper. Together, you will develop an idea for an AI application. Then you will look at which choices matter, such as data use, hardware and energy consumption.
Based on these choices, we create a recipe for growing algae. The algae then show what the effect is: do they grow well, or do they start to decline? In this way, the impact of AI becomes visible through living material.
So in 3 hours, you will not only create a design, but also experience how technical choices can affect the natural world.
Who is it for?
Anyone who is curious about AI, design, nature and the future of technology. No prior knowledge is needed.
